By paying children to babysit, we are teaching them a great deal of life lessons. We are showing them that when you work hard, you get good rewards and with those rewards you can purchase the things you want in life. I’m not saying it’s bad if you do not pay your children for babysitting; especially if they’re just doing it here and there but I think it’s a good idea.

I grew up babysitting a lot and felt like I did it for nothing. It was a lot of stress and there weren’t any rewards. I think I would have had much more fun with it if I could have looked forward to something. The day in and day out of babysitting wasn’t something I enjoyed because I felt completely forced into the matter.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think children should be paid to watch their siblings or should they do it for free because it’s for the family?

The great thing about babysitting is, you can pick your own hours and pick your own rates. Of course, if you are asking for a price per hour that people cannot afford, they are going to look elsewhere. When starting out, it is a good idea to talk to other locals who babysit and see what their rates are. This will give you a good starting point as well as a competitive edge. Keep in mind, if you plan on babysitting more than three children; you are going to need a license. Laws vary from state to state, so it’s always a good idea to do your research. Most people aren’t going to watch that many kids on a consistent basis, especially a teenager so this typically isn’t something worth fretting over.

There are babysitting courses that can be taken to help prepare your teenager for the road ahead of them. If you have younger children, I’m sure they have already learned quite a bit along the way. Take that extra step to explain to them things like how to disciple, what to do in the case of various emergencies and that kind of thing. Making sure your child has a list of numbers such as a trusted neighbor who can help give advice or a ride to the doctor if needed is a must. You may not ever need them but this will give you the peace of mind knowing your teen is safe and has the support they need.

Babysitting is going to teach your teenager how to interact with adults in a new way, be businesslike as well as experience what it will be like when they have kids one day. Overall, they’re going to love the freedom and the spending money that they get during the process. Having them use a portion of the money to help pitch in with things like their part of the cell phone bill and such will teach them great responsibilities. This is also a great opportunity to teach them how and why it’s important to save.

You can get your babysitting license by contacting your local Red Cross Center. There, you can sign up for classes. Oftentimes, classes are even available online. At the completion of these courses, you are going to receive a certificate; which you can place in the location where you will be babysitting, in a place where parents will be able to see (Like by the front door).

It is also a good idea to get First Aid and CPR Certified. All three of these certifications are going to show potential clients (parents) that you know what you’re doing and in the case of an emergency, you would have the proper tools and knowledge to keep their children safe.

If you are going to be babysitting at your home, you should make sure the house meets fire, building and health department standards. Again, not a requirement but parents are going to look for these kinds of things.

Rules and regulations vary from state to state, so it’s always a good idea to do a bit of research to see if there are any babysitting requirements in your state. The more effort you put into babysitting, the more work you are going to receive; which means more cash in your pocket.

You should consider the number of children in the family before you decide to take the job. If you are new to the job, you should not babysit for more than two children.

When you are, ask to do the major housework and the laundry then you should be paid for being the housekeeper as well as the babysitter. Sometimes parents mistakenly think that a babysitter also means a housekeeper.

When you do take a job, as the babysitter makes sure that you are written instructions on any special care that a child needs. You should also have contact numbers for parents when applicable, the family doctor, and any other emergency numbers you might need readily available. You can find a babysitting job on the internet, postings at your local church, and sometimes postings at your local grocery store. You should give references to the parents where you are applying for the babysitting job. Then it is your right to get references from those parents for your safety.
